New learning materials!

rypervenche Posted in 新聞

During my trip to Taiwan, I picked up a bunch of books and haven’t really touched them since I got back. I thought it would be a good idea to pick some of the books and use them as topics for posts on here. I’ll be using the following books:

I’ll start with my posts soon. If any of you have any requests for things that you want to see, leave a comment and I’ll be sure to take it into consideration. 🙂

Anki flashcards

rypervenche Posted in 新聞, 雜項

I’ve been studying languages for many years and one of the most common learning tools is flashcards. A very popular learning method and tool is known as SRS, or spaced repetition software. One such software is Anki. I have avoided Anki for many years thinking that it would be too boring for me, however I have recently begun using it and I have to say that it is quite effective. It is open-source and available on Windows, Mac, Linux/BSD, iOS, Android, and can even be used from a browser. On top of that, they have a website that you can sync your decks to, as well as your progress. That way, you can study on your computer, have it sync to the site, then continue studying on your phone without having to re-review flashcards unnecessarily.

I created my own deck of the 4808 most commonly used characters (according to Taiwan’s Ministry of Education) and cross-compiled it with the definitions from CC-CEDICT. While this deck will probably not be useful to most people, it is for my own personal goal of learning more 漢字. If you happen to want to use it, you may find it on the AnkiWeb site here or here.

You can learn more about Anki and its many uses here: Many other people have also uploaded their own decks, so you can very easily find already-created decks for Chinese here:

Here are a few screenshots of the Android app for Anki:

As you can see, I am using Bopomofo (注音符號) for my pronunciations, however I have also included pinyin in my deck if you want to use it.

While learning single 漢字 is great, I am a firm believer in learning character compounds when learning a character. That is why while I am studying each character, I learn compounds that go with each one. For example:

For 糞 I learned 糞肥 and 糞便.

For 廬 I learned 結廬 and 廬舍.

For 努 I learned 努力 and 努嘴.

Anki has been a great tool for me so far. I hope you find it useful as well.

Posting schedule

rypervenche Posted in 新聞

So I now plan on posting every Monday. If/once more people start viewing my blog then I may start copying xkcd’s schedule and posting every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. This keeps my posts consistent and doesn’t wear me out too quickly. No more giant lulls where I don’t do anything for months. One post a week, for good. If you want more, then leave a comment.

What say you?

RSS feed!

rypervenche Posted in 新聞

So we have an RSS feed now. Click on the link in the “Useful Links” to get instant notifications when a new post is made. If you don’t know how to use RSS, and have a Google account, you can use Google Reader. If you have any questions, leave a comment and I can help you get it set up.^^

New Vocab

rypervenche Posted in 新聞

So I’ve decided I would like to start making posts with new vocabulary that I’m learning. They must all be accompanied by a real-life example, and perhaps an example sentence. I may hold off on the example sentences for now, since I don’t have very much time to dedicate to this. However, I would like to make this a daily thing or maybe every few days if possible.

Let me know what you think!

Even newer domain name :)

rypervenche Posted in 新聞

So I decided that I wanted to reserve for my personal things, so for now I have it set up to automatically redirect to I hope you guys like the new domain name. Leave a comment about what you think. I hope to start posting again very very soon. I still have a few more things I’d like to do to the site before then, but it won’t take long.

On my list of things to do:

Set up AWStats

Don’t worry if you don’t know what those are. 🙂 Hope to hear from you all soon!

現在用中文版的WordPress 😀

Yay, wordpress is back up!

rypervenche Posted in 新聞

So I finally got WordPress back up on a server. I know it’s taken me a while, but I’ve had a lot of things going on. I may still have a few problems with PHP not working properly. If you see a 502 error, please let me know by emailing me at

UPDATE: PHP problem has been fixed. The only thing left is the date on the left-hand side should probably be in Chinese. Maybe I’ll change the language of my entire site. Hmm…

Under Construction

rypervenche Posted in 新聞

Hi all. I have just finished moving my blog from Blogger to WordPress, so expect things to be a bit strange for a while. I have to change the layout a bit so things look smoother. I am working on figuring out how to localize parts of the page so that the dates aren’t all screwed up on the left of each post.

So a lot has to be done and I don’t have a lot of time to work on it. Sorry for the delays. I’ll hopefully be posting again soon.

Hi all. For those of you who are trying to access the blog using, it won’t work. I have changed the URL for two reasons. One, I now own a domain, so it will be much easier to type the site, and 2, I had a little pest problem, so changing the URL will fix that.

So here’s the new address.

A lot easier, eh? 🙂

Who knows if I’ll ever get back to writing posts or not. I’m not quite sure what I’m going to be doing with the blog. I may start writing things if I don’t have to make up little lessons each time. I don’t know. I’ll think of something. In the meantime I am trying to learn more about DNS and LAMP (Linux stuff). So yeah…

And I suppose be careful with whom you share this site. I don’t need people who are not open-minded viewing my blog.

See ya 🙂
